The trip
Seals, seabirds and sea life
The Farne Islands lie off the coast of North Northumberland, between Bamburgh and Seahouses. They are home to the largest colony of grey seals in the North Sea, and to huge colonies of terns, puffins, guillemots, shags, eider ducks and kittiwakes. There is plenty of wildlife to see, depending on the time of year you visit.
In and out of the water
The area around Seahouses and the Farne Islands is one of the richest and most beautiful on the east coast of the UK. It is protected as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with many National Trust sites and plenty of heritage nearby, so there is lots to explore both in and out of the water.
Diving from a hard boat
You will get valuable experience of diving from a hard boat with a diver lift. We will be diving with Billy Shiel’s Diving Charters.
To keep the costs down, we stay self-catering at the Seahouses Hostel. The rooms are clean, warm and comfortable, which is all you really need after a day’s diving, and the kitchen is good for sorting out your own breakfast and packed lunches. In the evening, why not have a group BBQ, or just go down the pub?

Trip planning
- Qualification: we recommend Advanced Open Water and Drysuit as the minimum. There is plenty of time over the next few months to get to this level or do a scuba refresher — contact us to arrange it.
- Kit: bring your own kit, including 2 cylinders, or hire kit including 2 cylinders from us at club rates for the weekend (£50). If you just need an extra cylinder, it is £10 including the air fill for Saturday’s dive.
- Bedding: bring your own duvet or sleeping bag and a towel, or hire them from us for £10.
- Transport: group transport to Seahouses is not included, but we will try to put people in touch with each other to share lifts and split the cost.
- Meet the group: once we know who is going, we will arrange a group meeting and dive at Gildenburgh, so you can meet the group leader, who will go through the weekend’s logistics.
